Philippine Independence Day Greetings From Canada

Here's a Statement by Stéphane Dion, Leader of the Liberal Party, on the 110th Anniversary of Independence of the Philippines.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our parliamentary caucus, I would like to offer my best wishes to everyone celebrating the 110th anniversary of the independence of the Philippines.

This occasion offers an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the vitality of the Filipino community in our country and the strength of Canada’s multicultural character.

New Canadians have chosen to come to Canada from the Philippines in ever increasing numbers, bringing with them cultural traditions that enrich the fabric of our country.

They have overcome culture shock, competition in the labour market, and language barriers to build strong families, businesses, and cultural communities that contribute so much to our shared prosperity.

I hope, and I know, that all Canadians will take the opportunity this day presents, to celebrate the diversity of our country and the important part the Filipino-Canadian community continues to play in Canada's resilient growth.

As you take part in the festivities – sampling some of the food, music and dance that Canadians of Filipino descent have brought to our country – let us all remember that the prosperity of our country is built upon the strength of our multicultural spirit.

As you enjoy the events marking the 110th anniversary of Philippines Independence Day, please accept my warmest regards for a most memorable celebration.
