When Haiti was hit by a killer quake last year, Canadian Government launch several programs to support Haitians. Here are some of the programs to support earthquake victims.

And now, Citizenship and Immigration Canada even makes it easier for Haitiians in Canada to get a work permit. Labor Market Opinion (LMO) will no longer be required.

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations generally require work permit applications to be accompanied by a determination by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada that there is no adverse impact on the labour market. This is known as a labour market opinion, or an LMO. By removing this requirement, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is making it easier for Haitians who are here to work and maintain their immigration status.

Haitian nationals applying to extend their work permit will also receive continued coverage under the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). New applicants who are eligible for these measures will now also benefit from the IFHP.

CIC Call Centre hours extended this weekend

This weekend (January 23-24), the Call Centre will be open as well, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, to respond to the increased volume of calls on Canada’s special immigration measures for Haitian nationals.

Special immigration measures in response to the earthquake in Haiti

The Government of Canada introduced special immigration measures in response to the earthquake in Haiti. Under this program, priority will be given to new and existing sponsorship applications from Canadian citizens. Haitians in Canada temporarily will also be allowed to extend their stay, and if unable to support themselves, will be allowed to apply for a work permit.

Just like the Special Immigration Program for Typhoon Victims in the Philippines, the said special immigration measures do not apply to new and existing Federal Skilled Worker Program.

Please note that the Canadian Visa Office in Haiti has also been affected by the recent earthquake and services are extremely limited. Given the circumstances on the ground, and the challenges of reduced staff and damage to the visa office, it will take some time to process applications. Citizenship and Immigration Canada will provide information on where people normally served by the office in Port-au-Prince should submit their questions and applications.

Transit visa waived for aid workers to and from Haiti transiting through Canadian airports

Passengers aboard non-commercial aircraft bringing aid to and evacuating people from Haiti that are making a technical stop or transiting through Canada’s airports temporarily will not require a visa, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today.
