Certain Religious Support Roles

In some cases, individuals who support the religious mission of the organization may qualify — but the role must still be primarily religious in nature. Purely administrative or commercial jobs usually do not qualify.


What Makes a Strong C50 Application?


Even though it is LMIA-exempt, approval is not automatic.

Immigration officers will carefully review:


  • Whether the Canadian organization is a legitimate religious institution

  • Whether the job duties are genuinely religious

  • The applicant’s religious training, ordination, or experience

  • The genuineness of the job offer


The Canadian religious organization must also submit the offer of employment through the Employer Portal and pay the employer compliance fee (unless exempt).


Clear documentation is everything. Vague job descriptions or duties that look secular rather than religious are common reasons for refusal.


How Long Is the Work Permit Valid?


C50 work permits are usually issued for the length of the religious assignment. Extensions may be possible if the role continues and all requirements remain met.


Can Religious Workers Become Permanent Residents?


C50 is a temporary work permit. However, depending on your situation, there may be pathways to permanent residence later on.
